CommentMembers of this protein family are cytochrome c552, a component of cytochrome c nitrite reductase, which is known more formally as nitrite reductase (cytochrome; ammonia-forming) (EC Nitrate can be reduced by several enzymes. EC reduces nitrite all the way to ammonia, rather than to ammonium hydroxide (nitrite reductase (NAD(P)H), EC or nitric oxide (nitrite reductase (NO-forming), EC Some examples of EC occur in a seven gene system that enables formate-dependent nitrite reduction, but is also found in simpler contexts. Members of this protein family, however, belong to the formate-dependent system.
