CommentMembers of this sigma factor protein family are strictly limited to endospore-forming species in the Firmicutes lineage of bacteria, but are not universally present among such species. Sigma-I was shown to be induced by heat shock (PMID:11157964) in Bacillus subtilis and is suggested by its phylogenetic profile to be connected to the program of sporulation (PMID:16311624).
