CommentBoth ectoine and hydroxyectoine are compatible solvents that serve as protectants against osmotic and thermal stresses. A number of genomes synthesize ectoine. This enzyme allows conversion of ectoine to hydroxyectoine, which may be more effective for some purposes, and is found in a subset of ectoine-producing organisms.
